Freelance with the Community Edition
Updated: Apr 30
For several years at the beginning of my time as a photographer I would volunteer or work freelance for a few newspapers and magazines in Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph.
I was a writer and photographer for the Community Edition for a few of those years and very much enjoyed my time there. I had the chance to meet other creatives and sometimes interview them and snap a few pics. It was a pleasure to volunteer my skill and time because I felt like I got so much out of it. I felt more connected to the community.
For the past two years (2018 and 2019), I was voted Best Photographer in their annual Best Of competition. What a thrill to win and amongst some truly amazing and talented photographers in the area.
My absolute favorite opportunity from this outlet was making imagery for their monthly sex ed column, 'Sexsplanations'. Written by Stacy from the SHORE center in Kitchener. Each month I would connect with her to learn the topic and discuss possibilities. We came up with some really great ideas. My absolute favorite is the hanging fruit image for her article on menstruation.
Check out this wonderful resource in the KW area. You can find more of my work on their site. This was such a fantastic step on my journey as a photographer. Always growing and learning! :-)
